There is a quote by Pastor Steven Furtick that explains almost all modern unhappiness:

“The reason we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our behind-the-scenes with everyone else’s highlight reel.”

Social media has weaponized this tendency.

When you scroll through Instagram or LinkedIn, you are not seeing reality. You are seeing a movie trailer.

You see the vacation photo (but not the argument the couple had 5 minutes before).

You see the “I launched my startup!” post (but not the 3 years of depression and debt).

You see the six-pack abs (but not the dehydration and lighting tricks used to get the shot).

You, on the other hand, know your reality intimately.

You know you woke up late. You know you feel bloated. You know you are worried about money.

The Comparison Trap:

You compare your Messy Truth vs. their Polished Fiction.

Of course you feel like a loser. You are playing a game that is rigged against you.

The Curated Lie

Nobody posts their failures.

Nobody posts a selfie of themselves crying on the bathroom floor.

Nobody posts a screenshot of their rejected bank loan application.

Nobody posts the “fight” where they screamed at their kids.

We curate our lives to signal status. We want to look rich, happy, and successful. This is human nature.

But when you consume this content for hours a day, your brain starts to believe that everyone else is happy and successful, and you are the only one struggling.

This is a distortion of reality.

Everyone is struggling. Everyone is insecure. Everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about. The person with the perfect Instagram feed is often the most lonely person in the room.

The “envy” Algorithm

Social media platforms know that envy drives engagement.

If you feel inadequate, you buy things. You click things. You strive.

The algorithm is designed to show you people who have slightly more than you.

If you like fitness, it shows you people with better bodies.

If you like business, it shows you 20-year-old millionaires.

It keeps the carrot just out of reach so you keep running on the hamster wheel.

How to Opt Out

You cannot stop people from posting fake perfection. But you can stop consuming it.

1. The “Mute” Button is Your Best Friend

You don’t have to unfollow your successful friends (that might be awkward). But you can Mute them.

If seeing someone’s posts makes you feel jealous, insecure, or “less than” mute them immediately. protect your peace.

2. Follow Reality

Curate your feed to include people who are vulnerable. Follow accounts that talk about failure, struggle, and the messy parts of life. Balance the input.

3. Catch the Thought

When you feel that pang of jealousy, stop and say to yourself:

“I am seeing 1% of their life. I don’t know the other 99%.”

Remind yourself that you wouldn’t trade your entire life for theirs—because you don’t know the hidden costs they are paying.

The Verdict

The only person you should compare yourself to is who you were yesterday.

If you are making progress compared to your past self, you are winning.

If you are comparing yourself to a stranger on the internet, you are losing.

Wake up. The screen is a mirror of distortions, not a window to the truth.

The Challenge:
Identify one account on social media that consistently makes you feel jealous or “not good enough.”
Unfollow or Mute them right now.
Do it. You won’t miss anything, and you will instantly feel lighter.

Why does a video game feel boring after an hour?

Why does the second slice of pizza never taste as good as the first?

Why do you feel “numb” even though you have access to infinite entertainment?

The answer is Dopamine Tolerance.

Your brain adapts to high stimulation. If you blast your brain with dopamine all day (TikTok, sugar, video games, porn), your brain fights back. It lowers your baseline sensitivity to keep you balanced.

The result? The “Grey World.”

Normal life feels boring. A walk in the park feels agonizing. You need higher and higher doses of stimulation just to feel “okay.”

You don’t need a new video game. You need a Reset.

The Experiment: The Dopamine Fast

A few months ago, I felt completely burnt out. I couldn’t focus on a book for more than 5 minutes. I was irritable.

So, I tried a 24-Hour Dopamine Fast.

The rules are simple, but brutal. For 24 hours, you remove all sources of “cheap” dopamine.

The “NO” List:

❌ No Phone / Computer / TV.

❌ No Music / Podcasts.

❌ No Tasty Food (Rice and beans only. No spices).

❌ No Sex / Masturbation.

❌ No Drugs / Alcohol / Caffeine.

The “YES” List:

✅ Drinking water.

✅ Walking.

✅ Writing (Pen and paper only).

✅ Meditating.

✅ Sitting and staring at a wall.

The Phases of the Fast

Phase 1: The Itch (Morning)

The first 4 hours are pure torture. You will reach for your phone 50 times, even though it’s in a drawer. You will feel anxious. This is your brain screaming for its fix.

Phase 2: The Crash (Afternoon)

You will feel incredibly bored. You might nap. You might just sit there. You will question why you are doing this.

Key Insight: Boredom is the cleaning crew. When you are bored, your brain finally has the space to process emotions and thoughts you have been suppressing with noise.

Phase 3: The Clarity (Evening)

Something magical happens around hour 12.

The mental fog lifts.

I went for a walk, and the trees looked greener. I ate a plain bowl of rice, and it tasted sweet. I wrote 10 pages in my journal because my brain was desperate to output instead of input.

By lowering the noise, I recovered the signal.

Why It Works

You are resetting your “Hedonic Threshold.”

By making your day incredibly boring, you lower the bar for what your brain considers “fun.”

When you play video games all day, reading a book is torture.

When you stare at a wall all day, reading a book feels like an action movie.

Scarcity creates value.

The Verdict

You don’t need to do this every week. Once a month (or even once a quarter) is enough.

It is a “System Restore” for your mind.

If you feel like you are sleepwalking through life, stop adding more stimulants. Try removing them.

Embrace the boredom. It is where the magic happens.

The Challenge:
You don’t have to do 24 hours yet. Try a “Dopamine Detox Sunday” this week.
From 8 AM to 8 PM: No screens. No phone.
Go for a hike. Read a physical book. Cook a meal.
See how slow time feels. See how clear you feel on Monday morning.

Imagine you walk into a supermarket. You fill your cart with steak, wine, and fresh vegetables. You walk to the register, and the cashier smiles and says:

“It’s free. Take it all. See you tomorrow!”

You would be suspicious. You would wonder, “What is the catch? How do they make money?”

Yet, this is exactly what we do every day online.

We use Google for free. We use Facebook for free. We use Twitter for free.

We think we are the customers of these companies. But we aren’t.

Advertisers are the customers.

We are the livestock.

The Attention Economy

There is a famous saying in Silicon Valley:

“If you are not paying for the product, you are the product.”

These companies are not charities. They are the most profitable businesses in the history of the world. How?

They are mining a resource. That resource is not oil or gold. It is your attention.

Every second you stare at a screen, they collect data.

They know what you click.

They know how long you hover over a picture of your ex.

They know what you buy.

They know where you sleep.

They package this data into a precise profile of your psychology and sell access to your eyeballs to the highest bidder.

It Goes Deeper: Behavioral Modification

It isn’t just about showing you ads for shoes. It’s about changing your behavior.

Jaron Lanier, the father of Virtual Reality, argues that “The Product” isn’t just your data. The product is the gradual, slight, imperceptible change in your behavior and perception.

They show you content that makes you angry so you stay on the app longer.

They show you perfectly curated lives so you feel insecure and buy beauty products.

They manipulate your dopamine so you can’t put the phone down.

They are not just watching you; they are programming you. And they are doing it to make a profit.

The “User”

There are only two industries that call their customers “users”:

Illegal Drugs.

Software.

This isn’t a coincidence. The business model relies on addiction. If you aren’t addicted, you aren’t profitable.

How to Opt Out

You can’t completely escape the modern world, but you can stop being an “easy target.”

1. Pay for Privacy

Whenever possible, use paid services instead of free ones.

Use a paid email provider (like ProtonMail) instead of Gmail.

Use a private search engine (like DuckDuckGo) instead of Google.

When you pay with money, you don’t have to pay with your soul.

2. Poison the Well

Confuse the algorithm. Don’t give them a clear picture.

Use a VPN.

Use ad-blockers.

Turn off “Personalized Ads” in your settings.

3. Be Conscious

The most powerful defense is awareness. When you open Instagram, remind yourself: “I am entering a marketplace where my attention is being sold.”

This simple thought breaks the spell. It stops the mindless scrolling.

The Verdict

Your attention is finite. It is the only thing you truly own.

Don’t give it away to a corporation that hates you for free.

Stop being the product. Start being the owner.

The Challenge:
Go to Google > My Activity (or Facebook > Settings > Ad Preferences).
Look at the list of “Interests” they have tagged you with.
It is terrifyingly accurate. They know you like “Fitness,” “Marvel Movies,” and “Mexican Food.”
Delete the history. Clear the cache.
Make them work for it.

In the early 1900s, a Russian physiologist named Ivan Pavlov ran a famous experiment. He would ring a bell, then feed his dogs. After a while, he could ring the bell and the dogs would salivate immediately, even if there was no food.

They had been programmed. Bell = Reaction.

Does that sound familiar?

Ding! (You check WhatsApp).

Buzz! (You check Instagram).

Chime! (You check Email).

You are the dog.

We like to think we are in control of our devices, but if a metal rectangle in your pocket vibrates and you immediately stop what you are doing to look at it, you are not the master. You are the servant.

The “Push” vs. “Pull” Method

To regain your freedom, you need to understand the difference between Push and Pull technology.

Push Technology (Default): The world pushes information onto you whenever they want. Your boss, your friends, and advertisers can reach into your pocket and interrupt you at any second.

Pull Technology (The Goal): You choose when to go and “pull” information from the device. You check your messages on your schedule, not theirs.

When you live in “Push” mode, your brain is in a constant state of defense. You are always waiting for the next attack on your attention. You can never fully relax or fully focus.

The VIP Rule

“But what if there is an emergency?”

This is the number one excuse people use to stay enslaved to their notifications.

Here is the reality: 99% of notifications are not emergencies.

A “Like” on your photo is not an emergency.

A newsletter email is not an emergency.

A group chat meme is not an emergency.

The Fix: The VIP Filter.

You need to set up your phone so that only actual emergencies get through.

Phone Calls: Leave the ringer ON for calls. If someone is dying, they will call you. They won’t DM you on Instagram.

Everything Else: OFF.

How to Do It (The Nuclear Option)

This will feel scary, but it will change your life immediately.

Go to your Settings right now.

Instagram/TikTok/Twitter: Turn off ALL notifications. (Badge icons, banners, sounds – kill them all).

Email: Turn off ALL notifications. (You should check email when you decide to work, not when a spammer decides to email you).

WhatsApp/Messages: Turn off sounds and lock screen previews. Keep the badge icon if you must, but don’t let it light up your phone.

The Result: The “Library” Phone

Your phone should be like a library.

When you walk into a library, it is quiet. It is useful. You go there to get information, and then you leave.

Your phone currently acts like a casino.

It flashes lights, makes noises, and tries to keep you addicted.

We live in the age of obesity.

I don’t just mean physical obesity. I mean mental obesity.

Just as we are surrounded by cheap, sugary food that destroys our bodies, we are surrounded by cheap, sugary information that destroys our minds.

Breaking News.

Twitter Feeds.

Viral Videos.

Celebrity Gossip.

We consume gigabytes of data every single day. We tell ourselves we are “staying informed.”

But ask yourself this: When was the last time a piece of “Breaking News” actually changed a decision you made in your daily life?

Probably never.

We are drowning in information, but we are starving for wisdom.

The “Junk Food” of the Mind

Tim Ferriss coined the term “Low-Information Diet.”

The logic is simple: Information is food for your brain.

Books/Deep Articles = Protein & Vegetables (Builds muscle, sustains energy).

Social Media/News = Skittles & Soda (Sugar rush, anxiety, crash).

If you ate Skittles for breakfast, lunch and dinner you would get sick.

Yet, most of us feed our brains the equivalent of candy 24/7. No wonder we are anxious, unfocused, and mentally exhausted.

Circle of Concern vs. Circle of Influence

Why is the news so toxic? Because it focuses almost entirely on things you cannot control.

Stephen Covey visualized this perfectly:

Circle of Concern: Wars, politics, the economy, what a celebrity said. (Things you worry about but can’t change).

Circle of Influence: Your habits, your work, your family, your health. (Things you can actually change).

The media forces you to live in your Circle of Concern. It makes you feel angry and helpless.

Digital Wellness is about shrinking your Circle of Concern and expanding your Circle of Influence.

“But… I need to be informed!”

Do you?

“Being informed” is the greatest lie of the information age.

Knowing that a crime happened in a city 3,000 miles away does not make you a better citizen. It just makes you paranoid.

If something is truly important (like a new law or a major event), the news will find you. You won’t be able to miss it. Your friends will talk about it. Your coworkers will mention it.

You don’t need to check the ticker every hour to catch the 1% of signal amidst the 99% of noise.

How to Go on the Diet

You need to treat information like a supply chain manager.

Switch from “Just-in-Case” to “Just-in-Time.”

Just-in-Case: Reading random articles because “it might be useful someday.” (Hoarding).

Just-in-Time: Searching for specific information only when you have a problem to solve. (Efficiency).

The Protocol:

Delete News Apps: Remove CNN, Fox, BBC, and Twitter from your phone.

Unsubscribe: If an email newsletter doesn’t teach you a skill or make you money, kill it.

The 7-Day Fast: Try going one week without reading any news.

The Verdict

The modern world rewards Focus, not trivia.

The person who knows every headline is exhausted.

The person who ignores the noise and focuses on their craft is unstoppable.

Selective ignorance is not a weakness. It is a superpower.

The Challenge:
Go to your phone settings and look at your “Screen Time.”
Identify the app you use most for “News” or “scrolling.”
Delete it for 24 hours. Just one day.
Notice if you feel “out of the loop” or if you just feel… free.

I always considered myself a focused person.

I read books. I have goals. I tell people I’m “too busy” to watch Netflix series or go out on weeknights. If you asked me last week how much time I spend on my phone, I would have guessed: “Maybe 90 minutes? Two hours max. Mostly for work and research.”

I believed that. I genuinely believed I was using technology as a tool.

Then, I decided to wake up to reality.

I opened the “Screen Time” settings on my Phone and looked at the average for the last 7 days.

5 hours and 42 minutes. Per day.

I stared at the number. I refreshed the page, hoping it was a glitch. It wasn’t.

The Breakdown of Shame

I wasn’t using that time to read philosophy or manage my stock portfolio. Here is the ugly reality of where that time went:

Instagram: 2 hours 15 minutes (Reels are a black hole).

Twitter/X: 1 hour 30 minutes (Doomscrolling news).

YouTube: 1 hour (Shorts and random video essays).

WhatsApp: 45 minutes.

I realized I wasn’t “busy.” I was distracted. I was treating my brain like a garbage disposal, feeding it endless, low-quality content every single waking hour.

The Math of Life (The Reality Check)

5 hours and 42 minutes doesn’t sound that bad, right? Everyone does it.

But let’s do the math. This is the part that actually scared me.

5.7 hours a day = 39.9 hours a week.

That is basically a full-time job. I was working a 40-hour workweek for Mark Zuckerberg, for free.

Let’s zoom out to a lifetime. If I keep this pace up for the next 40 years:

5.7 hours x 365 days x 40 years = 83,220 hours.

That is 9.5 YEARS of my remaining life.

Imagine reaching the end of your life and realizing you spent an entire decade staring at a 6-inch piece of glass.

You could have learned three languages. You could have built a million-dollar business. You could have got into the best shape of your life. You could have played with your kids.

Instead, you watched strangers dance on the internet.

The Detox: 3 Steps I Took Immediately

I didn’t throw my phone in the ocean (I need it for work). But I realized I needed friction. The apps were too easy to open.

Here are the three changes I made immediately:

1. The Bedroom Ban This was the hardest one. I bought a cheap $15 analog alarm clock. My phone now charges in the kitchen overnight.

The Result: No more scrolling for 45 minutes before sleep. No more checking emails the second I open my eyes.

2. Grayscale Mode I turned my screen black and white. (Settings > Accessibility > Display > Color Filters > Grayscale).

The Result: Instagram looks terrible in black and white. The dopamine hit vanishes. My brain stopped craving the colorful icons.

3. The “One-Second” Pause I deleted the apps that were killing me (Twitter and Instagram) from my home screen. I didn’t delete the accounts, just the apps. If I want to check them, I have to log in via the phone web browser or laptop.

The Result: That 10-second friction was enough to make me realize, “I don’t actually want to check this; I’m just bored.”

The Withdrawal

I’m not going to lie to you—the first 48 hours were miserable.

I felt “phantom vibrations” in my pocket. I would sit on the couch and instinctively reach for a phone that wasn’t there. I felt anxious, like I was missing out on something important.

But then, something strange happened on Day 3.

I got bored.

For the first time in years, I sat in a chair and just… thought. I looked out the window. And in that boredom, my brain started to wake up. I had an idea for a project. I remembered to call a friend.

I realized that boredom is not the enemy. Boredom is the soil where ideas grow. We have been killing our creativity by drowning it in content.

The Challenge

You think you aren’t addicted. You think you’re in control.

Prove it.

Check your screen time right now. Don’t guess. Look at the number.

If it’s higher than 3 hours, you are losing days of your life to a machine.

Leave a comment below with your daily average. Let’s shame ourselves into changing.

Note: My average is now down to 1 hour 45 minutes. I reclaimed 4 hours of my life every single day. That’s 28 hours a week. What could you do with an extra 28 hours?
